kPreview scans your image at 75 dots per inch, which produces a reduced, low-resolution image in the Scanner window. You do a preview so you can define the area of the image you want to scan and choose a representative area on which to try out your settings.
Note that a preview image is not a Macintosh document. The actual scan appears in the document window.Àá/
